JWST in space

It's a seductive idea: could the extreme redshift of the furthest objects we see actually be a blueshift in disguise, signaling the approach of a different bubble universe?

The answer lies in the spectra. JWST doesn't just see a red smear; it reads the distinct chemical barcodes of carbon and nitrogen. These atomic emission lines are shifted toward the red end of the spectrum — an unambiguous signature of space expanding between us and the galaxy.

Faster Than Light

Because the redshift is cosmological, not a special-relativistic Doppler effect, MoM-z14's recession velocity breaks the speed of light. Today, it sits roughly 34 billion light-years away, receding at ~700,000 km/s (2.33c). When it emitted the light we see today, it was receding at an astonishing 5.15c.

This doesn't violate Einstein's speed limit, because the galaxy isn't moving through space at that speed. Rather, the space between us is expanding, carrying the galaxy along with it.
